First-Timer Mistakes to Avoid in Marrakesh

First-Timer Mistakes to Avoid in Marrakesh

We’ve all been there, wandering through the streets of a new country, excited to explore every corner and pick up souvenirs for the people we love.

And of course, we trust the locals when we’re buying things, especially when we’re juggling an unfamiliar currency and just trying to enjoy the moment.

Here’s a list of first-timer mistakes to avoid when visiting a new country, and in our case, Marrakesh.

Some of these may already sound familiar, while others might be completely new or unexpectedly useful.

1. Don’t Take the First Taxi at the Airport

Always ask for the price first.
Taxi drivers at airports often quote inflated rates to new arrivals. Asking for the price before getting in helps you avoid surprises and ensures you’re not overcharged from the moment you land.

2. Get a Local SIM Card

Your home carrier will almost always be more expensive.
Picking up a local SIM as soon as you arrive gives you reliable data for maps, translations, and ride apps without the hefty roaming fees or hidden charges your home provider might add.

3. Research Before You Book Anything

Tours, transfers, and hotel offers vary widely in price and quality.
A quick online check can save you money and prevent you from accidentally booking overpriced or poorly reviewed experiences. Your hotel or riad might offer convenience, but not always the best value.

4. Keep a Close Eye on Your Belongings

Crowded markets and busy streets can attract pickpockets.
The souks are incredible, but they’re also fast-paced and chaotic. Keeping your bag zipped and your phone secure avoids any unnecessary stress during your trip.

5. Learn the Local Currency & Exchange Rate

It’s easier to shop confidently when you know what you’re spending.
Understanding the value of the dirham helps you make better decisions and avoid paying more than you should at shops, taxis, or markets.

6. Be Ready to Haggle

It’s normal here, and expected!
In Marrakesh, bargaining isn’t rude; it’s part of the culture. Vendors often start with higher prices, so don’t be shy to negotiate politely and with a smile.

7. Compare Prices Between Stalls

The same item can vary a lot in price.
I found identical items priced three times higher just a few stalls apart. Take a quick walk around before committing to a purchase, you’ll likely get a much better deal.

8. Always Double-Check Your Change

And ask for a receipt, especially at the airport!
Mistakes happen, but sometimes they’re intentional. We were short-changed by €10 at the airport’s Paul bakery, and the cashier initially gave us the wrong receipt. Always check your total and your change before walking away.

9. Don’t Choose Restaurants Just Because There’s a Queue

Crowds don’t always mean good food.
In Marrakesh, some of the best meals come from quiet, family-run spots. A long line can simply mean a place is touristy, not necessarily tasty.

Marrakesh is full of beauty, excitement, and the occasional surprise, but that’s all part of the journey. By keeping these simple tips in mind, you’ll spend less time stressing and more time enjoying everything this incredible city has to offer.
Here’s to making unforgettable memories, staying savvy, and exploring with confidence!
